Water Wise – Water Saving Tips

waterwise1.pngA professionally installed, automatic sprinkler system is one of the best investments you can make in your home. There’s no easier or more cost-effective way to beautify your home, increase its value, and save yourself time and money.

A properly designed and installed automatic sprinkler system uses less water than a single lawn sprinkler. Not only are sprinkler systems more efficient, they are more convenient.

cooltext283256421722785Adjust your irrigation controller (timer) run time for seasonal change –  making a monthly change to the irrigation operation times can save more water and money than any other thing you can do.

cooltext283256599183191Run your irrigation system during the morning hours  – Less water is lost to evaporation when the temperature is cooler, plus in most areas the wind doesn’t blow as hard in the mornings. Watering in the evenings can lead to turf and plant disease problems because the water sits on the plants all night, especially in humid climates.

cooltext283256697286368Give your sprinkler system a tune up –  In order to ensure there are no water leaks, breaks or cracks, or clogs in the systems, irrigation systems should ideally be checked annually, usually in spring or early summer.

cooltext283256769900202
Fix leaking valves –  fix leaks, replace broken lines, repair or replace sprinkler heads, and install new parts, including back flow preventers, valves, and controllers.

cooltext283256841954992Install a Smart controller –  A Smart controller does the work of periodically adjusting the sprinkler operating times for you. It changes the run times to reflect the current water needs of the plants.

cooltext283257375218405Update your system  – Technology in sprinklers has advanced over the last 20 years and many new sprinklers are more water efficient than the older models. Generally this option is only cost effective if you have a very old sprinkler system, or if your original sprinkler system was poorly designed.

Spring Start Up

Summer, here we come! With warmer weather on the way, it’s time to begin your sprinkler system start up and prepare to start watering again.

When should you have your sprinkler system turned on? Scheduling your spring start-up depends on the weather conditions and your individual watering needs. Usually any time after the third week of March is a safe bet for starting up your sprinkler system. Please call early in the season to schedule your lawn sprinkler start-up; the best time to tune up your system is before you need it.

Winterizing Your Sprinkler System

winterize2015
<!–Winter and cold weather is not far off and that means it’s time to start thinking about winterizing!

This also means it is time to think about turning off your irrigation systems as weather allows. Digital Rain Sprinkler Service is now taking calls at 402-934-7900 to schedule your system close down.

When to Winterize

The weather conditions each year will determine the best time to winterize your sprinkler system. Although most of the system is underground and protected until the ground freezes, external parts like the backflow preventer and blow-out port can freeze from cold overnight temperatures. You should winterize as soon as you are sure you no longer need continual watering, although you may want to keep your system running as long as possible if you have new trees or have done a fall seeding.

Damage occurs when water freezes and expands inside sprinklers, pipes   and valves. Therefore, enough water has to be drained from the system to prevent breakage before cold weather hits.

What We Do :

Our technicians will turn off the water supply, clear and prepare all the lines to prevent freezing, and leakage. The cost to make repairs on systems which have frozen is great and a bit of prevention each fall will ensure you are leak-free and ready to water your lawn and landscape in the spring.

1. Shut off water pressure to your irrigation system

2. Open main drain valve to drain out main line

3. Open drain valve inside electric valve box to drain lateral lines

4. Manually open all electronic valves to allow lateral lines to drain into mainline

5. Keep valve solenoids and bleeder valves open for winter

6. Open test ports on backflow device in order to winterize backflow device

7. Close gate valves on backflow device

Sprinkler Blowouts – Why You Should Hire a Professional Service

Sprinkler blowouts are a simple services for professionals to provide, but the easy and quality of a professional sprinkler blowout comes from experience.

Even small amounts of water trapped in a valve or pipe can expand enough during freezing weather to crack and damage your sprinkler system, and using high pressured air improperly through a sprinkler system can not only damage your system, but can also be dangerous.

Drip Irrigation–A Smart Choice

Carl Jarl Group | Our Promise to You- Convenience – Peace of Mind – Protection<!–

Consider Drip Irrigation.
Studies show that drip irrigation systems use 30 – 50% less water than conventional watering methods, such as sprinklers. Drip irrigation is the slow, precise application of water and nutrients directly to the plant root zone in a predetermined pattern. Drip irrigation helps maintain the root zone at ideal moisture level, encouraging the formation of deeper roots and more abundant foliage, at the same time saving water through reduced evaporation and runoff.

  • Improves growth – Smaller amounts of water applied over a longer amount of time provide ideal growing conditions. Drip irrigation extends watering times for plants, and prevents soil erosion and nutrient runoff. Also, because the flow is continuous, water penetrates deeply into the soil to get well down into the root zone.
  • Discourages weeds – Water is only delivered where it’s needed.
  • Saves time – Setting and moving sprinklers is not required. A timer can be added to the system for automatic watering.
  • Helps control fungal diseases, which grow quickly under moist conditions.
  • Adaptable – A drip irrigation system can be modified easily to adjust to the changing needs of the seasons

info1

Properly designed, installed, and managed, drip irrigation may help achieve water conservation by reducing evaporation and deep drainage when compared to other types of irrigation such as flood or overhead sprinklers since water can be more precisely applied to the plant roots. In addition, drip can eliminate many diseases that are spread through water contact with the foliage.

Because of the way the water is applied in a drip system, traditional surface applications of timed-release fertilizer are sometimes ineffective, so drip systems often mix liquid fertilizer with the irrigation water. This is called fertigation. The chemicals may be added constantly whenever the system is irrigating or at intervals. Fertilizer savings of up to 95% are being reported from recent university field tests using drip fertigation and slow water delivery as compared to timed-release and irrigation by micro spray heads.
