Winterizing Your Sprinkler System

winterize2015
<!–Winter and cold weather is not far off and that means it’s time to start thinking about winterizing!

This also means it is time to think about turning off your irrigation systems as weather allows. Digital Rain Sprinkler Service is now taking calls at 402-934-7900 to schedule your system close down.

When to Winterize

The weather conditions each year will determine the best time to winterize your sprinkler system. Although most of the system is underground and protected until the ground freezes, external parts like the backflow preventer and blow-out port can freeze from cold overnight temperatures. You should winterize as soon as you are sure you no longer need continual watering, although you may want to keep your system running as long as possible if you have new trees or have done a fall seeding.

Damage occurs when water freezes and expands inside sprinklers, pipes   and valves. Therefore, enough water has to be drained from the system to prevent breakage before cold weather hits.

Check Your Sprinklers

Regular maintenance of your system will save you water, time, and money!
Tips to increase the efficiency of your lawn watering system:

1. Regularly inspect your overall watering system for leaks, broken lines or misdirected sprinkler heads. Taking a few minutes once a month to make sure your sprinkler and/or hoses are working correctly is a crucial step to ensuring efficient water use outdoors.
2. Set it, but don’t forget it! Be sure to adjust your watering schedules throughout the summer. Not sure how? we are here to help.
3. Consider an irrigation upgrade. Don’t just guess at how much moisture your lawn needs. Trust Digital Rain Sprinkler Systems to provide you with the right amount of water every time.
4. Install a rain sensor. Rain sensors are designed to shut off sprinkler systems when rainfall reaches a preset amount, usually ¼ inch.  Once the moisture level subsides, the sensor re-enables the sprinkler system, resuming the previous watering schedule
5. Choose plants and grasses that will thrive in your soil conditions. When it comes to landscaping your yard, make sure you take some time to research what plants and grasses will hold up best in your climate.
6. Work with Mother Nature, and not against her. You’d be surprised how much moisture your lawn can retain following a thorough summer rain. Make sure to set your timers and controllers properly.dripping2

Drip irrigation exceeds 90 percent efficiency whereas sprinkler systems are 50 to 70 percent efficient. It is so efficient that many water utilities exempt landscapes irrigated with drip from restrictions during drought.

Quick Facts…
* People interested in waterwise gardening should consider drip irrigation.
* Odd-shaped and narrow areas are easily irrigated with drip systems.
* Drip irrigation stretches water supplies and may be exempt from water restrictions imposed during drought.
* Drip irrigation equipment is readily available and can easily be installed.
* Common setup mistakes include not installing a filter or pressure reducer, use of overly long lengths of mainline, and adding too many drip emitters.
* Drip systems can be easily changed over time as plants grow and needs change. Use goof plugs to plug holes in mainline that are no longer needed.
* Fertigation can easily be included with minimal waste of fertilizers.

Fertigation

Because of the way the water is applied in a drip system, traditional surface applications of timed-release fertilizer are sometimes ineffective, so drip systems often mix liquid fertilizer with the irrigation water. This is called fertigation; fertigation and chemigation (application of pesticides and other chemicals to periodically clean out the system, such as chlorine or sulfuric acid) use chemical injectors such as diaphragm pumps, piston pumps, or aspirators. The chemicals may be added constantly whenever the system is irrigating or at intervals. Fertilizer savings of up to 95% are being reported from recent university field tests using drip fertigation and slow water delivery as compared to timed-release and irrigation by micro spray heads.

Summer and Your Lawn

Fun in The Sun

Summer and Your Lawn

The principal purpose of summer watering is to maintain an attractive green surface when it may be appreciated the most.
Sprinkler Service in Omaha  Homeowners who have a lawn-care service should not allow their lawn to enter drought dormancy! Most lawns in our area consist of cool-season lawn grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescue. These grasses naturally slow down and may go dormant in the heat of summer.

Cool-season grasses (such as fescue, bluegrass, and rye) grow best when temperatures are in the 60s F.
Warm-season grasses (including Zoysia, St. Augustine, Centipede, and Bermuda) like temperatures in the 70s.
Don’t let your lawn go brown and dormant, then try to “water it back to life.” If your lawn goes dormant in summer, it should stay that way until fall – don’t worry, it should recover once the weather changes.

We recommend watering lawns all summer as needed to keep them green.

  • Water Wisely
    SIM_COLOR(1)
  • Lawns need at least one inch of water per week when the heat is severe. Use a rain gauge to keep track of the amount of water received from rainfall and irrigation.
  • Water deeply and less frequently to encourage drought-tolerant roots.
  • Water early in the day to reduce evaporation and fungal growth.
  • Either water your lawn regularly and deeply, or don’t water at all.

Tips for July

  • Water your lawn as needed. If you do not water, your lawn will naturally go dormant.
  • Early in July, fertilize with a controlled-release or slow-release fertilizer. For grass growing in the sun, use the label rate of the fertilizer that you have selected. For grass growing in the shade, apply half of the label rate. If your lawn has been consistently fertilized for 10 to 15 years, if you leave clippings on your lawn when you mow, or if your lawn has gone dormant, skip this application.
  • Apply a grub control product to your lawn if there is a history of grub problems and/or your lawn is a high maintenance (i.e., regularly watered) lawn.
  • Avoid seeding and spraying for weeds.
  • Watch for insect pests, diseases, and other lawn problems.

It’s best to hold off until later in the season for most other lawn care, including fertilizing, seeding, thatch control, and applying weed killers. The period from late August through early September is ideal for many of these services. For now, help your lawn by proper mowing, watering.

A Word About Mowing
mow

Mowing height and frequency directly affect the performance of a lawn. The shorter turf is cut, the more frequently it should be mowed. Mowing a lawn short under the assumption it will require less frequent cutting is responsible for much lawn deterioration.

When grass is cut too closely, not enough leaf surface remains to manufacture necessary foods for sustenance and root growth. For this reason, it is best to never remove more than one-third of the green leaf area with a single mowing. If you miss a mowing, cut half way back to the intended height, and then a couple of days later cut again.

Many mosquito problems in your neighborhood are likely to come from water-filled containers that you, the resident, can help to eliminate. All mosquitoes require water in which to breed.

Be sure to drain any standing water around your house. Even the smallest of containers that can collect water can breed hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes. They don’t need much water to lay their eggs. ( bottles, buckets, barrels, overturned trash can lids, etc.)

Top Tips

• Dispose of any tires.Tires can breed thousands of mosquitoes.

• Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers.

• Clear roof gutters of debris.

• Clean pet water dishes regularly.

• Check and empty children’s toys.

• Repair leaky outdoor faucets.

• Change the water in bird baths at least once a week.

• Canoes and other boats should be turned over.

• Avoid water collecting on pool covers.
