Winterizing Your Sprinkler System

winterize2015
<!–Winter and cold weather is not far off and that means it’s time to start thinking about winterizing!

This also means it is time to think about turning off your irrigation systems as weather allows. Digital Rain Sprinkler Service is now taking calls at 402-934-7900 to schedule your system close down.

When to Winterize

The weather conditions each year will determine the best time to winterize your sprinkler system. Although most of the system is underground and protected until the ground freezes, external parts like the backflow preventer and blow-out port can freeze from cold overnight temperatures. You should winterize as soon as you are sure you no longer need continual watering, although you may want to keep your system running as long as possible if you have new trees or have done a fall seeding.

Damage occurs when water freezes and expands inside sprinklers, pipes   and valves. Therefore, enough water has to be drained from the system to prevent breakage before cold weather hits.

Sprinkler Blowouts – Why You Should Hire a Professional Service

Sprinkler blowouts are a simple services for professionals to provide, but the easy and quality of a professional sprinkler blowout comes from experience.

Even small amounts of water trapped in a valve or pipe can expand enough during freezing weather to crack and damage your sprinkler system, and using high pressured air improperly through a sprinkler system can not only damage your system, but can also be dangerous.

Drip Irrigation–A Smart Choice

Consider Drip Irrigation.
Studies show that drip irrigation systems use 30 – 50% less water than conventional watering methods, such as sprinklers. Drip irrigation is the slow, precise application of water and nutrients directly to the plant root zone in a predetermined pattern. Drip irrigation helps maintain the root zone at ideal moisture level, encouraging the formation of deeper roots and more abundant foliage, at the same time saving water through reduced evaporation and runoff.

  • Improves growth – Smaller amounts of water applied over a longer amount of time provide ideal growing conditions. Drip irrigation extends watering times for plants, and prevents soil erosion and nutrient runoff. Also, because the flow is continuous, water penetrates deeply into the soil to get well down into the root zone.
  • Discourages weeds – Water is only delivered where it’s needed.
  • Saves time – Setting and moving sprinklers is not required. A timer can be added to the system for automatic watering.
  • Helps control fungal diseases, which grow quickly under moist conditions.
  • Adaptable – A drip irrigation system can be modified easily to adjust to the changing needs of the seasons

info1

Properly designed, installed, and managed, drip irrigation may help achieve water conservation by reducing evaporation and deep drainage when compared to other types of irrigation such as flood or overhead sprinklers since water can be more precisely applied to the plant roots. In addition, drip can eliminate many diseases that are spread through water contact with the foliage.

Because of the way the water is applied in a drip system, traditional surface applications of timed-release fertilizer are sometimes ineffective, so drip systems often mix liquid fertilizer with the irrigation water. This is called fertigation. The chemicals may be added constantly whenever the system is irrigating or at intervals. Fertilizer savings of up to 95% are being reported from recent university field tests using drip fertigation and slow water delivery as compared to timed-release and irrigation by micro spray heads.

Go Green

274px-Gogreen

Lawn sprinkler systems are going green. Besides just helping to keep your lawn a deep green, automatic lawn irrigation systems offer special eco-friendly features to conserve water. This is good news for everyone.

  1. Water at the right time. Watering in the early morning or late evening when temperatures and wind speeds are the lowest will reduce water loss through evaporation.
  2. Set your timers. To keep your yard healthy with just enough water, it is important to set your timer with a watering schedule that suits your area considering the amount of rainfall you usually get.
  3. Calibrate your irrigation system. Be sure to calibrate your irrigation system to determine how long to run the system so that it delivers the amount of water recommended for your area
  4. Position sprinklers properly. Make sure the water lands on your plants and grass and not on paved areas.

ws_infographics_outdoor

Use less water for your lawn and garden. One inch of water weekly is recommended for both lawns and vegetable gardens. Subtract the amount of rainfall per week from this figure to calculate how much you’ll need to supplement. Water early in the morning to minimize water loss due to evaporation. Watering deeply 2-3 times a week – rather than sprinkling lightly every day – promotes deep root growth, increasing efficient utilization of moisture and resistance to dryness and heat. Direct water toward the roots instead of the upper part of the plant; wet leaves are more vulnerable to sunburn.

rbar1

Use even less water for your lawn and garden.

  1. Rain Barrels. If you’d like to reduce your utility bills, you can collect rainwater in barrels or tanks for home use. Set up a rain barrel or a gray water  system to recycle water from precipitation or household runoff for use in hydrating your lawn and garden.
  2. Xeriscaping. Think about devoting a part of your yard to xeriscaping, growing drought-tolerant plants which demand minimal watering.

Check Your Sprinklers

Regular maintenance of your system will save you water, time, and money!
Tips to increase the efficiency of your lawn watering system:

1. Regularly inspect your overall watering system for leaks, broken lines or misdirected sprinkler heads. Taking a few minutes once a month to make sure your sprinkler and/or hoses are working correctly is a crucial step to ensuring efficient water use outdoors.
2. Set it, but don’t forget it! Be sure to adjust your watering schedules throughout the summer. Not sure how? we are here to help.
3. Consider an irrigation upgrade. Don’t just guess at how much moisture your lawn needs. Trust Digital Rain Sprinkler Systems to provide you with the right amount of water every time.
4. Install a rain sensor. Rain sensors are designed to shut off sprinkler systems when rainfall reaches a preset amount, usually ¼ inch.  Once the moisture level subsides, the sensor re-enables the sprinkler system, resuming the previous watering schedule
5. Choose plants and grasses that will thrive in your soil conditions. When it comes to landscaping your yard, make sure you take some time to research what plants and grasses will hold up best in your climate.
6. Work with Mother Nature, and not against her. You’d be surprised how much moisture your lawn can retain following a thorough summer rain. Make sure to set your timers and controllers properly.dripping2

Drip irrigation exceeds 90 percent efficiency whereas sprinkler systems are 50 to 70 percent efficient. It is so efficient that many water utilities exempt landscapes irrigated with drip from restrictions during drought.

Quick Facts…
* People interested in waterwise gardening should consider drip irrigation.
* Odd-shaped and narrow areas are easily irrigated with drip systems.
* Drip irrigation stretches water supplies and may be exempt from water restrictions imposed during drought.
* Drip irrigation equipment is readily available and can easily be installed.
* Common setup mistakes include not installing a filter or pressure reducer, use of overly long lengths of mainline, and adding too many drip emitters.
* Drip systems can be easily changed over time as plants grow and needs change. Use goof plugs to plug holes in mainline that are no longer needed.
* Fertigation can easily be included with minimal waste of fertilizers.

Fertigation

Because of the way the water is applied in a drip system, traditional surface applications of timed-release fertilizer are sometimes ineffective, so drip systems often mix liquid fertilizer with the irrigation water. This is called fertigation; fertigation and chemigation (application of pesticides and other chemicals to periodically clean out the system, such as chlorine or sulfuric acid) use chemical injectors such as diaphragm pumps, piston pumps, or aspirators. The chemicals may be added constantly whenever the system is irrigating or at intervals. Fertilizer savings of up to 95% are being reported from recent university field tests using drip fertigation and slow water delivery as compared to timed-release and irrigation by micro spray heads.
